I cut mine back last year because it was flopping over my Campanula glomerata,
some carnations, a rose and a bunch of lilies ( they told me it would spread,
but nobody told me that by the second year that little sprig would be nearly 6
ft across). It came back fine, and this spring I moved some of the other
plants to give it some room. It did rebloom but more sparsely than the
initial bloom period. I have just finished chopping it back again-got enough
to fill a large plastic garbage pail, and I left the centre part intact.
