Re: Blooming ahead of time?

Ann,

I, too, like the dark Heucheras. Have you seen the new one from Dan Hinkley
at Terra Nova Nursery? He has a wholesale nursery and some great plants!
Anyway, he has a plant called Heuchera americana 'Velvet Night'
which he lists it as a TDF plant (to die for). Haven't actually seen it,
but it's wild! Can see a picture of it at his web site:
http://www.terranovanurseries.com/heuchera21.html

Other foliage that I like is anything variegated. How about Guara
lindheimeri 'Corrie's Gold'? Yellow variegation makes this a winner. Phlox
'Nora Leigh', a phlox with green and white variegation. Lysimachia ciliata
is a purple leafed form with yellow flowers. Yes it can get a bit invasive,
but it's easy to pull. Lysimachia punctata 'Alexander's' is another nice
one with green and white variegation. There is a low gray plant called
Veronica incana which has the usual blue spikes though they are done
blooming for this year. There is a chartreuse feverfew as well as some
columbines--Aquilegia 'Woodside' is particularly pretty. I also use small
conifers as well as other small shrubs scattered throughout my garden for
texture as well as winter interest.

The list goes on, but that should give you some new ideas. Let me know if I
can help more.

Ginny
