Our shastas at the GH are blooming now, they are in gallon containers.
The shastas in my yard are just showing a bit of color in the buds.
The shastas growing under the shade of the fir trees are budded, but
showing NO color.
Last year, I took cuttings from Esther Reed in June or so. I potted
them up in early fall and they bloomed in mid thru late fall. I'd
almost bet that if you cut the buds off half the plant, you could get
the plant to bloom in two flushes. Once from the buds you allow to go,
and the second time from the laterals that grow from your cutback stems.
Hmmm....I ought to put that to the test when I have the time. Let's
see....that ought to be in 25 years, when I retire.
If anybody decides that they can't wait that long, and tries this
themselves, please let me know how it turns out. Then i can take this
chore off my TO DO List.
