Re: Sweet William

I have 3 different dianthus, but don't really know the correct names.
One is a tall, airy plant with small butter yellow flowers, which will
not rebloom if I deadhead. The other two are short (only about 6 inches
tall) and will rebloom sporatically if I deadhead them. These two are a
rosy red and a clear white. I love them all.

The only yellow "pink" is D. knappii, but I have never seen it. If that
is what you have, you are the only person I have ever heard say anything
nice about it outside of a seed catalogue. Hopefully Rand can help us
with that.
As for the rest of the family, my motto is "You can never have too many
Dianthus." Pinks, Sweet William, hardy carnations, they are all great,
and I love them. The pinks are great edging plants for the front of the
border, and carnations and Sweet William should be in the midborder of
every garden. I don't grow the annual pinks because I'm too lazy to keep
starting new plants every year, and too cheap to buy them, but there are
a lot of great annual pinks available from the bigger seed houses if you
get a kick out of seed starting as so many gardeners do. I'm sure Rand
can suggest some good US sources.
