I don't know how reliably hardy kirinishoma is. Here in Zone 6a, mine barely
survived a very mild winter and has just one small sprout. This spring I
bought a new k. koreana and k. palmatum and they're doing fine. One flower
bud has already arrived, which is very early in my experience. Actually, the
bud is prettier than the actual flower in my opinion. The bud looks something
like a standard carnation bud and when the yellow begins to show is when it is
at its most striking. My two new plants are both sprawling and I think it is
probably a little late to try to stake them; didn't have this problem with
last year's plant. We'll see what this winter does to the two new guys. One
is planted in the shade of a dogwood and the other nearby in the shade of a
flowering crab--different locations than the failing one.
