I have several columbine (aquilegia), native and otherwise. All are
different heights, colors, fullness, etc. The yellow one is only 1 1/2
years old and is about 2 1/2 feet high. It's a fairly delicate plant
and doesn't look as if it's going to get a lot bigger. Columbine really
varies in size-- some (such as c. alpinus) stay very small, while others
get 3+ feet tall and pretty bushy. Their main "spread" isn't so much
via bulking up but by self-seeding lots of new plants.
In any case, I love my columbine--the flowers are so exotic-looking.
They would be a great eye-catcher for you empty spot. They also attract
hummingbirds, honey bees, and butterflies.
