I think you were wise not to use a weed whacker on your coreopsis. I
deadhead mine very tediously, stem by stem. I get repeated blooms
throughout the summer this way.
Yes, the stalks do break at ground level sometimes, but I don't worry about
this.
Speaking of deadheading, I would just like to say that a lot of people seem
to cut just the flower head off, leaving "blank" stems swaying in the
breeze. The plant looks much more natural if the stems are cut to the base
of the plant. Think about it.
