North Hill Symposium

I just returned from an inspiring symposium held in Readsboro, southern
Vermont. It was organized by Wayne Winterroud and Joe Eck, both talented
garden writers. The theme was "Gardening Takes Nerve." There were four
lectures by speakers on topics such as "Growing What you Shouldn't"
talking about growing tropical plants in northern climes, the fear of
the Native Plant movement, a hysterical lecture by Tres Fromme who works
at Longwood Gardens and a good look at avant garde garden design. I have
been to many symposia, but never have I been to one so theoretical and
thought provoking.

The highlight was a one hour tour of North Hill, Wayne & Joe's garden.
It was amazing! There were carefully tended garden rooms with roses,
sedum and crambe. A marvelous 2 acre wooded slope with digitalis, hosta
and huge prehistoric looking foliage plants, the name of which escapes
me. A beautiful alpine garden that had their primula 'North Hill Strain'
in bloom at the base. I had seen their garden before on The Victory
Garden and in magazine illustrations, but nothing could have prepared me
for the awesome scale of the place. The symposium is always the last
Friday in June. I highly recommend it as an reinvigorating experience.
