Hi all,
Just about caught up with myself after a short break & have realised
someone asked about Chelsea.
Yes its wonderful, and an event worth attending at least the once to
experience the excitement, atmosphere & the history. Unfortunately,
you also get to experience the crowds & that makes it difficult to see
all the displays, especially the show gardens. I found it difficult
to appreciate some of them as I don't associate gardens with throngs
of people, but the ideas on show really demonstrate what is possible
in a garden. This year there was lots of steel and structure & while
we may not all want that ourselves, its good to see designers ideas in
the flesh to understand the options.
Inside the marquee you get to see plants in utterly perfect condition,
displayed either in beautiful planting schemes, or alongside more
variations on a theme than you would think possible. I really liked
the Hillier Nurseries white & green garden & the UK Growers stand made
lettuce and cabbages look exotic and classy. I went on the secon
members day & some of the exhibits were beginning to flag, mainly
those with roses or tulips, but there was an amazing display of
daffodills two months after the season.
This is the last year of the great marquee, but the replacement looks
ok in the pictures.
Yes, I had a great time, but I also love the top notch local shows
around the country like the Malvern, Gardeners' World & my local
favourite, Shrewsbury. The standard of displays can be just as high
with the added excitement of being able to buy plants too. Usually
from nurseries more local to the area, and at a better price than in
the garden centres. For some, shows are their bread and butter so you
know you're getting good quality & plenty of choice. Are these shows
a UK thing?
I video'd the TV coverage, and saw things I'd missed on the day. It
was exhausting but what a day out.
Regards
Karen in Cheshire.
