Susan - it is funny that you mentioned that because up until a year ago I
thought the same thing about Southern Mexico and Central America.....just
learned there was a difference when my Mom-n-law was taking a trip to
Venezuela (sp) for an orchid show and she had to pack for fall weather.....I
think it's an equator thing.
Anyway - I'm glad you mentioned the dahlia subject because you have
encouraged me to read up on some things....which I always enjoy while the
little ones are asleep.
Do you ever watch HGTV - well there use to be a show on Monday nights
'Gardeners Diary'...I think now it is only on on Sundays--anyway Erica
Glaesner met with a few Dahlia growers and they did mention new varieties
coming out that would be more heat/humid tolerate. I think she was in
Alabama or somewhere. Well keep your fingers crossed for me.
I recently found a place to purchase a red brugmansia (one I've never seen)
and they told me it would not grow in the gulf coast because of the humidity.
I found this strange because I have been very successful with the other (6)
brugs that I have. It amazes me how the coast can make such a
difference....learning all of the time. It's also strange the way people on
the Southern Atlanta Coast can grow things that I cannot grow here on the
Gulf Coast....still don't know the reasons for that.
Sometimes I will buy a plant that requires full sun that is not for zone 9
and I place it in a part sun location and it does fine. I get much joy out
of those success'.
Anyway - happy growing
