I think it would depend upon what the fuel source in the grill was.  If it
was from a wood fire, the ashes could be used, although carefully, as they
are quite alkaline in reaction..

However, if, like most of us, you barbeque with charcoal briquettes, I
would be very leery, particularly because of the things that they add to
aid in burning - e.g. MatchLight, etc.

Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?
