Re: Salvia hians

Julie-

Now YOU have a collection of Salvia's.....I thought I was doing pretty good
at 18 different kinds...don't have the Salvia wagneriana....I will have to
look that one up. Do you have seeds for this one.....we may have to talk
trade. What zone are you in?

I purchased Saliva hians (or so called) at the Mercer Aboritum's
Annual Spring Sale in 1998. I'll have to search for my sale book and look at
the description they provided. My couriosity is up. I have this guy planted
in the shade because, if I remember right, this one can't take full sun....I
know that sometimes the larger the leaf the less sun a plant needs--(at least
with orchids)....I'm going back to my favorite garden center in 2 weeks (he's
getting a new shipment in) and maybe I'll take a leaf and bloom and ask
Mike----he knows just about all of the plants. Ironically, I never seen this
particular plant in a garden center.

I'm not in a frost free zone but I have been able to overwinter many topicals
such as brugmansias, hibiscus, and the yellow Mussaenda in the ground. And
so far, I've never lost one of my salvias in the winter....I protect
everything with hay. Here where I am this is very labor intensive because
you can't leave it on the plants because it could cause the plants to rot
and/or start to compost. Our winters are so strange, we may have a frost
with 32 degree temperatures on Sunday and by Wednesday the temperature will
be 70 during the day.

I did have a Salvia canariensis (sp) for a 1 1/2, lost it last
summer.....this one survived the winter fine but I think something must have
gotten to the roots of this plant (such as a mole) because I didn't see signs
of bugs. In fact, I've been looking for this guy again and nobody has it
this year. Mike told me he would try to get this in again and he would call
when it arrived.......This one's blooms are okay.....kinda rose pink but I
think the foliage is wonderful. Very grey and the leaves are shaped someone
like large arrowheads.

I will let you know what I find out....may have to order the seeds off of the
net for Salvia hians and then compare the plants....if they are different, I
just am fortunate enough to have yet another different Salvia in my garden.

Happy Gardening
