Hi Dee Ann,
I have to admit that I enjoy gardening here in the South, it is very nice to
not worry about 'wintering over' and cold frames and early freezes. The
annuals do not arrive in January, they are constant. Petunias, pansies,
poppies, snapdragons, and asters are all winter annuals here. Sunflower seeds
can be planted immediately after the winter solstice (Christmas) and do
better the earlier they are planted. (I know this is a perennials list and I
will get back on the subject).
There is a downside to all this abundance however. We cannot grow a great
many of the garden staples that you can up north. All the flowering bulbs,
tulips, hyaciths, daffodils, crocus, can only be grown for a single season
unless they are lifted very shortly after their bloom and stored in the
refrigerator for a dormant period (do not ask what is in my vegetable
crisper). Trees and shrubs that need a dormant cycle cannot grow here either,
peonies and clematis, just to name two.
So, I guess the point is, enjoy what you have and don't worry about what you
can't have.
Keep bloomin'
Lauren
