Tree peonies

>

Dear Karen Steward: You've gotten very comprehensive information from Gene Bush, Marge
Talt, and others about tree peonies, but there's one thing that says it all that no
one has mentioned yet:

Tree peonies have been called "King of the Flowers"!

Your question suggests that you might never have seen one in bloom. Alas, their
season is over in the mid-Atlantic states on this side of the Atlantic, but in more
northern climes you might still catch them in bloom. Do so, if you can; you won't
regret it, and you'll be a convert forever.

They're called tree peonies not because they ever attain the size of even small trees,
but because their stems, unlike those of herbaceous peonies, are woody, as has been
said, and are as permanent as those of many trees.

All the best,

Harry
