Hello all-
I was just out in the garden doing the "Flamingo Gardener's Dance"----you
know, pulling the weeds and deadheading and stuff --when what to my
wondering eyes did appear but one tiny bud coming up from the center of my
Acanthus...YEAH :o). This is a complete surprise. I don't know exactly
which one this is - I guess we will be able to tell once the bud develops and
blooms for me. After reading all the post about these guys not blooming I
had pretty resolved that I was just going to have to love the foliage and be
happy with that.
I have had this guy for about two years in a pot with nothing but small yucky
foliage - I was afraid to put it into the ground because I was told they are
prone to rotting in heavy rains....and sometimes our Fall/Spring rains can be
never ending. Well nothing ever happend so this Spring I decided I would try
them in the ground and if need be, I could always dig them up. I put them in
full sun in my raised bed (bottom 4" creek sand, topped with about 4-5" of
compost, and dressed with about 3" of cypress mulch) and have been
fertilizing with 1/4 strength Miracle Grow every two weeks or so----- I just
can't believe it!!!! At first I was just impressed with how large and
beautiful the foliage had grown and now I have this nice surprise.
I just wanted to share this with someone who could appreciate the feeling and
I think I've come to the right place to share my story.
Happy Gardening
