Betty -
Congrat's on your purchases......you should have some beautiful blooms this
Fall. But remember, you can't kill them....I have one in the back yard by
our gate and it is 4 feet from where my kids play in the step 2 pool. Well
we had gone out of town and left about 8" of water in the pool....well you
know what happens to untreated still water in the heat.....algea. So I had
to clorox the pool. I poured about 3 cups of clorox and completely filled
the pool with fresh water and let it sit for awhile....then I just let in
drain out. Well I didn't think about how close my brug was....in the next
few days all the leaves started to turn yellow and soon I have a yellow brug
full of buds and blooms with no leaves. The plant had a set back and now two
weeks later there are new leaves peeping through. Just don't be upset when
they get a little wilty in July/Aug during the hottest part of the
day....they will perk back up. In the ground just keep them well watered
during the heat.
In the winter when we are going to get freezing temps I wrap the bottom 3'
with hay and burlap. (you don't have to cover 3' up but it allows for faster
growth in the Spring and nice blooms earlier) I haven't lost one yet this
way. Of course, the cold temps don't stay so I'm out there every couple of
weeks raking hay on and off. I also always take nice large cuttings before
any frost...that way I ensure that I will have another in case I loose the
one in the ground due to freezing temps. You can simply put the cutting in a
gallon of medium and keep moist but not wet in the garage. It will look like
a stick all during winter and as soon as the weather warms you will have
foliage growth and and new plant to give to a friend or to trade
with....let's say, someone in Texas who might have one you don't have a vice
versa?!?!?!?!
Enjoy. Happy Gardening
