Can you give the rest of us a clue what this is - I've never heard of
a jade plant.

Are we talking about the "succulent jade plant"? I had a beauty and I
decided that he needed a prune and I hurt him - I believe I took it too far
and air must have entered the stem. I've learned (the hard way) that when
pruning a succulent it's better to prune a little at a time and let the wound
heal then go back for more. Some out there may dispute this practice but it
has worked for me.
