I'd add some own-root roses that can take some shade, bloom all season and
cleanly drop their blossoms. Plus some baptisia for its wonderful foliage and
height
(and underplanted with the minor to offset the knobby knees of the major),
maybe a clethra 'Hummingbird' bush (white and about 2'x3' in Chicago), maybe
a lonicera vine
for zappy color most of the summer and to draw hummers and soften a side of
the
house or a fence line, a caryopteris 'Dark Knight' and/or c. 'Worcerster
Gold' for the chartreuse
foliage and blue flowers late summer, veronica 'Blue Charm' for some vertical
design
(which can be deadheaded for all season bloom if she wants to), hypericum
'Hidcote'
for its shorter stature, wonderful lemon yellow flowers with long stamens and
lovely
contrasting red stems (not what one thinks of in hypericum), some Gaura
'Siskiyou
Pink' for bloom dark pink/white all summer and with it some euphorbia 'Dulces
Chameleon' to interact withe the Gaura's red/purple veining and the euph.

leaves. All of these can take some shade but most are carefree after
established and to the best of my knowledge are not bothered much by pests
and don't require much more than good soil to thrive. There's a small, lemony
yellow, continuous blooming shrub rose called 'Yellow Jacket' that stays
about 2.5x2.5 that I've just put into the
garden beds that I hear great things about - glossy, pretty foliage. One size
up would
be the new rose introduction, 'Baby Love'. And for added texture, some
liriope 'Silvery
Sunspot' which has a nicely variegated foliage, whiter in sun, more yellowish
in
shade. And how about a stand of phlox (sp.?) 'David' (white), which is mildew
resistant? Lastly, I'd tuck in some herbs and maybe some hardy boxwood for
year
'round interest.
Sure sounds like fun, Nancy...let us know what you end up doing for her.
