It has been blooming for a couple of weeks now (same time every year --
mid-June) in zone 5a USDA. The flowers are yellow with brownish-maroon
mottling, borne upgright either singly or in clusters of up to five.<<

I believe your mother's Toad-Lily is Tricyrtis latifolia.
If I'm not mistaken, all of the yellow-flowered Tyicyrtis are T. latifolia or
the related species T. macranthopsis, and T. macrantha. The other species
(T. hirta, T. formosana, T. macropoda) have flowers in combinations of white
with purple, lilac, pink or crimson.
Of the three yellow-flowered species, T. latifolia seems the most likely
because it is known to bloom as early as June. The other species are
late-summer blooming. Also, T. latifolia has terminal flowers. The other
two species have arching stems with flowers that hang from the axils.
