I don't have the answer to the flying bug part - but if I was a betting women
- I would bet that you brought home a plant that was infested with them or
had unhatched eggs...sometimes they are very hard to see. If you have a
small plant you can use alcohol swabs to kill them. I've noticed that when I
have purchased orchids that even though I have carefully inspected them at
the time of the purchase - two weeks later they may be covered in them. I
now treat everything I purchase for scale and mealy bugs whether visable or
not before putting into the garden or greenhouse.
I was introduced to the wax scale for the 1st time last year - they are a bit
easier to see - they have a white bumpy armour.
Good luck with this - I am currently fighting mealy bugs - I've never seen so
many, we have had so much rain lately I haven't been able to treat them. Now
that the rain has gone - the war has begun.
