RE: Phlox THE KING

Bob,
I had to look up Veronica austriaca in my perennial bible (Allan Armitage's
book) because I was not familiar with the name. It is another one of those
species that has had a recent name change. Veronica 'Crater Lake Blue'
falls into this species now and it is another dandy. The most incredible
cobalt blue flowers on very low creeping dark green foliage and can take hot
and dry. Veronica spicata is another that fares quite well with lavenders
and ornamental grasses. Has nice silver leaves, and spikey purple flowers.
All the Veronicas, in my experience, need good drainage.

Starlight is one of my favorite phlox-I never have a mildew problem with it
but I live in a fairly dry climate and it is down breeze from a rose bush
that I sometimes treat with sulphur for blackspot.
Georgia Blue is a nice veronica but I miss the long flower spikes.
I grow a prostrate variety of V austraica (at least that's what the label
said) that has been reliable and disease free for the last five years for
me, and is a heavy bloomer. It also forms a thick enough mat to choke out
most weeds.
