Have you tried insecticidal soap? Two brands, Safer and Concern, are widely
available at garden centers. You will need to spray at least once a week
until things are under control. Thrips have several generations a year,
maturing in about two weeks, so you will need to be diligent. Insecticidal
soap usually works very well, but it is most effective when the insects are
caught in the early stages.
Malathion and diazinon are really nasty. You are right to not want to use
them. Neem and Pyrethrum are botanical pesticides that are safer for the
environment (and you), if you feel you need something stronger than
insecticidal soap.
Thrips have many predators and hopefully some of them will be along soon to
help you. You might try purchasing some green lacewings or ladybugs. There
are beneficial nematodes available that kill thrips in the soil.
Be sure to destroy infected buds and flowers now and because thrips
overwinter in the soil, you will want to do a good fall cleanup that includes
cultivating and should probably cultivate again next year.
Good luck, and please let us know how things go. --Janis
