Hi Marge,
Your mentioning Christopher Lloyd sent me scurrying to my bookcase - you are
indeed right. It was in his Well-Tempered Garden, and he actually says:
"It is pleasant to discover that some of the most vigorous herbaceous plants
respond happily to being cut right down to the ground as soon as they have
flowered. ...... The best treatment for alstroemerias is to yank out each
stem with a sharp jerk. It will break cleanly away from the roots at about
6 in. below the soil surface, and you can then plant something temporary in
the gap."

Nan, that rings a bell in the dim recesses of my brain. I know that
I read it in something I considered authoritative.....could have been
one of Beth Chatto's books or perhaps one by Christopher Lloyd??
