They tend to last a long time, but I've found that they're very sensitive
about mowing or trimming before they've died back in the summer (the
leaves die back to the ground when it starts to get warm).

I used to have a huge patch of them (about 10'x20') under an old oak tree
in my backyard, but we had hired someone to mow our lawn... He was an
older guy who was somewhat impaired and needed money, so we let him mow
for $10/week. Well you guessed it -- shortly after the bluebells were done
flowering, he mowed the entire patch down to the ground! They haven't been
back since. :(

I have been finding small plants along the edge of my lot and in the lawn,
so I carefully dig them up and move them into the safety of my beds. :)

I'm excited this year, though. Among other things, one of the plants that
I received from Munchkin Nursery ( http://www.munchkinnursery.com/ ) is
Mertensia echioides, a close relative of Virginia bluebells:

Can't wait to see how it does!
