Hi Janet,

   I've read in various sources that Hepatica require their leaves 
   during winter months as they continue to use them as a source of
   nourishment.  I don't know if it's true for all species, just a 
   select few, or if it's just an old wive's tale, but I've always
   been afraid to cut them.
