Seen on a gardening programme here in the UK on Friday night. Anybody any
experience of growing it? Looks wonderful. I know it wouldn't be hardy
here in this part of the UK.

Louise:
Hi - I've been growing Salvia discolor for several (probably more like 5) years now. I am just west of Houston, Texas, Zone 9.
I grow this plant in a raised bed and provide the plant a nice "high" shade. It grows and blooms beautifully throughout the growing seasons. I usually dig this plant up before the first frost, even though I have had this plant survive a very mild winter - only experiencing brief dips in the temp. I would not consider this plant hardy by any means. It is probably best to keep a cutting or two overwinter for planting out the next season. It is a fast grower and will be a nice size plant in no time.
This plant also makes a great hanging basket because of the (almost) weepy habit of the plant....growing it like this will also show off the nearly black blooms a little better. S. discolor would make a great accent plant in a companion container too.
Hope this helps a little
