If any of you are from the Chicago area... I know the flower show
currently at Navy Pier destroys the displays. Maybe a few rare plants
and of course the ones that the vendors bring to sell are taken home if
not sold.
For those never involved in one of these big shows.. It is amazing how
quickly those bare rooms are transformed into living gardens. Trucks
bring in dirt, sand-- pay loaders moving stuff around... something to
see!
I watched all those cute displays destroyed... from those special
bricklayed patios and fences... taken down with a sledge hammer and
bulldozers. Un real! All that work and nothing salvaged.
Plants, bulbs and everything... just swept up and gone. So if you really
want something in a display-- stick around till the show ends and ask
the clean up crews if they care it you take some... Every answer was
always the same- make it quick and do it yourself.... Never came home
with less than a truck full of something... and wishing I had room for
more :)
Some of the non-profit groups I have been associated with had booths and
displays there, which is how I found out about all of this. The first
year I was shocked... after that... look out...:) I can now understand
that the cost involved with relocating most of that would not be worth
it... but for us thrifty gardeners... well.....
