This link is definitely (imho anyway) to an aphid. The white detritus looks a little small for adult whitefly but ... (I've been wrong before) :-)http://www.illianagardenpond.org/rudbeckiahirtaleaf.jpg Sorry for the cross posting, but I am desperate. I found this bug problem is more wide spread than I originally thought as I am going thru the pictures.:(
My experience in greenhouses says pretty much the same thing as most of the others - insecticidal soap, sticky traps - will work equally well on aphids and most species of whitefly. I did have success with biologicals in my greenhouses but in order to do this, you have to have a full plan in place. They do not work as a spray - ie. see a problem- release the predators - eliminate the problem. Biologicals work nicely when incorporated into the management of the greenhouse on an ongoing basis.
Someone did write not to spray when the sun was shining and I'm not sure why this is so. I confess the only time I ever sprayed was when the sun was shining so I could see the plants and problems. :-)) There is an old wives tale about not putting water onto leaves because the light refraction will burn the leaves but the light refraction through water droplets is at the wrong angles to do this. The only "burning" I ever saw was from when I mixed the soap too strong or hit the wrong plants. If I'm missing something here, I'm sure the list will again point me in the right direction. :-)
