Claire, I have an old MG friend who is an expert on veggie growing in our
area. He says he is a sucker for anything or idea that is new that claims to
obtain earlier tomatoes. He has tried it all and he says it doesn't make any
difference you get tomatoes when the weather conditions meets the needs of
the plant.
He to directly plants his seeds in the ground with protection.
I follow our ISU guidelines on when to plant the seed. This year it is
28 March.
