I think it might survive in zone 6 with a little extra water.  I've had
mine growing in full sun in front of my house for about five years now.
It does get some water from the irrigation system (it's right on the edge,
so it gets very little) and was planted in soil heavily amended with coarse
sand.

I've noticed that the crown seems to die out after a few years and the 
plant spreads in concentric rings.  It's kind of like those fairy circles
of mushrooms, I guess.

It's not.  :)  There is a list at hort.net dedicated to prairie discussions,
but this is fine since it's talking about the plant in a perennial gardening
context.  It's not like we're discussing prescribed burn plans for swaths
of prairie forbs.
