Do you have long hot, dry summers. This genus is from northern parts of
Eurasia and they do not like long hot dry periods. They grow great for me here in
Minnesota in normal, deep garden soil with some shade during the afternoon.
The sun will do a number on them in the summer here if they are exposed to the
hot afternoon sun.
They like moisture retentive soils best but NOT wet. They can take wet for a
while -- like when it floods.
