I like the scuffle hoe (if that is its correct name). A sharp U-shaped
metal blade loosely attatched to a long handle. It allows me to
shallowly cultivate the soil, cutting off weeds at or just below the
soil surface without the getting up and down so hard on the back. But
it is of more use in widely spaced plantings, in the more closely
planted beds, I use the New England weeder on my knees and my back just
has to ache.
