Hi, Judy,
I bought a shredder a couple of years ago, and can't imagine doing without
it. The research I did convinced me the electric shredders were toys, as
far as my needs go. I don't know *what* you could actually do with one.
You need a *lot* of power for them to work really well. I found I could get
a 5HP big name brand (Toro, etc.) for more than I wanted to spend, or a 8HP
Yardman for half that price, and I have been happy with the Yardman. And it
does seem to need all the power it puts out. 5HP might work, but I'm glad I
didn't get one.
In terms of jamming, I have had the most trouble with wet soggy stuff (last
years uncovered leaves and unturned old compost piles) and with very stringy
material. I chucked in a fork of very wilted iris pseudecoras, and had to
take the shredder apart to clear it! Fresh crisp leaves would maybe work,
but I am *not* going to try that again! Taking the discharge screen out
helps with the wet stuff.
Dragging that puppy around by the handle really is a pain. I use a garden
tractor and cart all season, so I got a tow-bar for the shredder for $30 and
I love it.
I have learned one other IMPORTANT CAUTION. A shredder blows around a *lot*
of dust, pulverized plant material and fungi. If you aren't allergic to it
the first few times you have a gust of wind cover you with it, most people
will BECOME allergic to it. Especially shredding old leaves and "finishing"
compost. I developed a nasty asthma that took months to clear up. Now I am
careful to use a 'NIOSH' (National Institute for Occupational Safety and
Health) approved, 2 strap particle respirator. The cheap hardware store
variety is better than none, but not good enough. I found a wide selection
available from Gempler's (800-382-8473). They sell a large variety of
supplies for agriculture, horticulture and landscaping. Also on the
internet at www.gemplers.com.
