Janice,
The current (Apr. '99) issue of 'Taunton's Fine Gardening' has an
article on lilacs by Jack Alexander of the Arnold Arboretum. The ones
he lists as the most fragrant (all are singles):
Syringa x chinensis 'Lilac Sunday' - light purple
Syringa patula 'Miss Kim' - light purple
Syringa v. 'Ruhm' van Horstenstein' - magenta
He also says that S. pubescens (pale purple opening to white) has a
"very spicy" scent and that its "untraditional scent may be the
strongest of all lilacs."
