Thanks for the advice Jean - the bed is indeed in shade except for a couple
of hours in the morning.   I have moved some lily of the valley to this bed
today.   Love epimediums: did not realize that they were okay in 'dry'
shade - this gives me an excuse to get some more.

    Two things I find which grow for me in shady dry beds are epimediums and
lily of the valley. You didn't say if the bed was in the shade or not, I
just thought maybe it was since it was on the north.
