Chantal,
They are definitely different genera, belonging to the same family.
Here's what I got from a GRIN search:
Hylomecon japonicum (Miq.) Prantl & Kündig
Genus: Hylomecon
Family: Papaveraceae.
Native: Asia-Temperate: China; Japan; Korea
Synonyms: Chelidonium japonicum Thunb.
Stylophorum diphyllum (Michx.) Nutt.
Genus: Stylophorum
Family: Papaveraceae.
Common names:
*celandine-poppy
*wood-poppy
Native: Northern America: United States - Arkansas [n.], Illinois,
Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan [w.], Missouri [e. & s.], Ohio,
Tennessee, West Virginia, Wisconsin
Synonyms: Chelidonium diphyllum Michx.
As you can see, Hylomecon comes from the far east and Stylophorum is
native to the US...both have different species of Chelidonium as
synonyms.
I found a nice photo of Hylomecon in Dan Hinkley's 'The Explorer's
Garden' (p. 149 for those of you who have the book) and, to my eye,
the foliage on Hylomecon is quite different in shape from that of
Stylophorum, although the flowers look identical. He also has
Stylophorum pictures (p. 145).
On the web, here's a good one of Stylophorum, showing the leaves,
which are much more cut and scalloped than Hylomecon...here's two
good images of this one on a Japanese site.
http://www4.big.or.jp/~nikko/flowers/data/1999/yamabukisou.htm
The web images show the flowers as more open on Hylomecon than on
Stylophorum..spaces between the petals when fully opened...dunno if
this is typical, but my Stylophorum stay more cupped than flat when
fully opened.
If your plants don't resemble these images, then somebody is
misnamed:-)
