How about caterpillars? There seems to be way more this year than in
previous ones in my garden. It's too early for grasshoppers and June bugs
to start chewing. The only other leaf-eating pest out right now would be
slugs to my knowledge. Have you had a wet spring? You'd be surprised at
how far those things can climb to get what they want. I've seen them on
the top of my tallest yarrows.
The only way to be sure is to go out in your garden after the sun goes
down. Take a flashlight and start checking the ground and under the
leaves. You can also check for their iridescent slimy trails early in the
morning when the dew collects on them.
Other bugs would be on the leaves during the day.
