RE: Baptisia australis


Janet,
 Baptisia has such a woody root system (like Peonies) so it can be very
difficult to divide.  It probably would be easier to take tip cuttings a
little later in the season (June or so) and root them if you are trying to
increase your numbers of plants.  If you are trying to make what you already
have smaller, dig it carefully while its dormant, saw it up and replant a
chunk in a place where it can get to be the large (like a shrub) plant it is
intended to be.

The ones I divided last spring didn't like being transplanted and died
before winter.
