RE: plant markers

Barb and All,
After our lengthy discussion of plant label markers that will/won't fade
last year, my conclusion was that there is not such thing as a pen that will
write on anything and not fade out in UV light. I got sick, sick, sick of
rewriting labels every fall & spring when using a fine point Sharpie. But!!
I went to a place here called Art Media and found a Japanese pen that has
held up without fading for a whole year. Brand name is Sakura Microperm.
It comes in several colors and tip sizes starting at 1 mm. I like the 3 mm
size for writing on white plastic stakes. Do NOT use the one for archival
documents, the ink runs in the rain. Think I'll pick up a Rub a Dub too and
make the comparison. The only person I've seen using the Brothers label
machine is Martha Stewart when she was busy labeling all her jars, shelves,
cupboards, etc. It looked pretty nifty, but I wonder if it holds up in the
weather?

Well, thot it was time to add my 2 cents...
No one has mentioned using mini-blinds altho they have been discussed in the
pass.

I cut the slats in approx. 8 inch pieces.
I have been writing on them with a "Rub-A-Dub" Laundry Marker that I get at
Wal-Mart. I started using this marker last spring and they all haven't
faded.
I like them for several reasons. They are easy to push in the ground. I
can write on both sides and can put basic info. I don't pull them out when
I
run the rake over things in the spring. They come in Khaki which blends in
pretty good. They are very inexpensive.

The "Rub-A-Dub" Laundry Marker is the only thing I've found that doesn't
fade. Sharpies and paint pens don't last in the sun. And grease pencils
wipe off too easily and you can't write fine enuf.

A year or two ago a little machine that makes garden labels that costs less
than $100 was discussed. Does anyone use this? Seemed really great if you
did a lot of labels or wanted a lot of info on your labels.

Best Wishes to you all --
