    Thanks for the suggestion, but here in the South the Japanese beetle is definitely an insect that I could recognize LOL!!  No, not a Japanese beetle.  We took a jar with leaves and unidentified insects to the County Extension Office today and they could not identify either.  So, they are sending them off to the state extension office for identification.  A real mystery!!  Will update when we find out.

Hi, Lynn:

The insect sounds quite similar to the dreaded Japanese beetle...a tad early
in the season tho, at least in Chicago...put it on a rose bud and see what
happens. Usually when you try to pick them up, they either drop to the ground
or fly away like a lady beetle.
