    The same thing happened to my husker red penstemon a couple of summers
ago.  I don't know for sure but think they may be a short lived perennial.
I took seed and grew some more and they are wonderful. I dug out the old
clump and replaced them. So far, so good.  Don't know if this is the problem
or not, just my experience.
