Hello Joanne
Sorry, don't have any Samuel suggestions. I was just
wondering about your Pretty Jessica rose, which I've also
had for over 10 years. Now that I've started to garden
seriously, I've come to realise what a dead loss it is.
Every year, it develops lovely buds, then, just as they're
about to open, it starts to rain and the buds don't open
properly, they just turn brown and eventually have to be cut
off. Is yours any more successful? I've only had one year
when it hasn't rained at the appropriate time (last year)
and I actually got to see all the flowers. And they were
very pretty and very smelly. I don't have any Jessicas in
the family, but a friend's little girl is Jessica, so I was
able to present her with her flower.
I also wanted a named garden. There's quite a lot I could
choose for one of my daughters, Alice (last week there was a
new rose at Chelsea called Miss Alice, thought I might give
that a try. The next-but-one rose seen was "England Rose".
I thought if only it was "English Rose", I could have had
them side by side and I would have had a "Miss Alice English
Rose" display and how appropriate that would have been -
look at my surname if you don't understand what I'm burbling
on about).
However my other daughter is a problem - has anyone ever
come across plants with the name Florence? I suppose all
flowering plants are appropriate, because the name Florence
is derived from Flora, but I would like something a little
more specific. And little did we know when we named her
that she would want to be a professional gardener when she
grew up.
