I think that this type of behavior warrants a one-time comment. I know
that I've been guilty of this in the past, and it's usually when I become
excited about a plant and just didn't think about possible ramifications.
A gentle reminder wouldn't be rude at all, and if I was the offender at
the time, I'd actually be thankful for the reminder. Now don't get
me wrong -- I don't put on hiking boots and stomp around in every
bed that I see. I've just been known to step in a bed before.
When I make a bed, I put 8x8" pavers (8x16 cut in half, about 20 cents
apiece) in spots throughout the bed where I didn't plant anything.
Then I always know where to step when I want to photograph something
and don't have to worry about hurting my plants. It also makes weeding
a lot easier.
My pet peeve is the picking of flowers. This past spring many of my
flower heads kept disappearing -- tulips, daffodils, grape hyacinth,
leopard's bane, etc. I suspect kids in the neighborhood, but I haven't
caught them at it yet.
When I was in grade school our house was part of the path taken by
many children to and from their classes. We used to see them picking
tulips in our garden as we ate breakfast and watched out the kitchen
window... <SIGH>.
