The way you tell them apart is that Chinese wisteria twines clockwise and
Japanese twines counterclockwise.  


I'm afraid you have that backwards.  When looking from above, the Chinese Wisteria, Wisteria sinensis, twine counterclockwise, while the Japanese Wisteria, W. floribunda, twines clockwise.
