Lots of the Epimedium will make it in zone 4, those that are rated for zone 5
will make it if you cover lightly over the winter with a mulch, just remember
to remove the mulch early because they like to come out of the ground early.
Great plants for a wood land garden, taking full shade to half day shade.
Best in open dappled shadow places were the soil is moisture retentive but
once established will take a dry soil too.
Under good conditions, many will grow into clumps a few feet across in a few
years.
I have grown them in almost full sun under Peonies, they do not mind some
sun.
In your zone 4 garden you should be able to grow a good number of different
plants, they have flower colors that include, red, rose, white, yellow, gold,
pink and purple/lilac but the foliage is what I like them for the best.
