The ants have nothing to do with opening the flowers, look at the millions of
Peonies sold as cut flowers around the world, no ants -- still open.
The ants are attracted to the flowers because just before they open, well
they open because, the flower parts swell and the result of this swelling is
the release of nectar from the nectar glands. This nectar oozes out the
sides of the flower ball before the flower opens, and is sweet, ants love it.
