Marilyn,
In South America this past winter (their summer), we saw dandelions of huge
size and in every location. They lined roadsides along with native plants
being able to grow and flourish in arid parts of the area we visited.
Dandelions were in the Botanic Garden of Buenos Aires and all the way down to
Tierra del Fuego. They can apparently grow in nearly any climate and where
frost free can remain dormant and green. In a refuge of native plants both
sides of the road were lined with dandelions, also plaintain. It is believed
to be a diuretic so the Spanish name for it was not a nice phrase when
translated. Same in French. Many visitors exclaimed over the dandelions -
hoping to find something less ordinary on roadsides. The English term for
the digger of dandelions may be one of exasperation but the Spanish and
French are far more colorful. Nobody likes dandelions.
