I would not plant more than 2 clematis on your arch (1 on ea side). I have a
number of clematis which do very well in my zone 4/5 garden. I have an arch
which is bout 4' deep and I have one clematis on each side entwined with a
rose. I also started Etoile Violette on a pergola which is about 10' deep
and is planted with roses. When planting with a rose I always select a class
3 clematis so in the event the stems get broken when in the process of
covering the roses for the winter it will not harm the vine. Sweet Autumn is
certainly one I would not plant near a walk way due to the bees it attracts.
Also this is a rampant grower.
Not to prune a clematis depends on the class. A class 3 blooms on old
wood and a vine in this class would not be attractive if not pruned.
I have a Betty Corning, small bell shaped bloom, which is soooo cute!
The most outstanding clematis which always brings 'ahs' is Mrs
Cholmondeley'. It is just beginning to bloom and will continue to bloom into
Jul. This has huge blue flowers.
