Claire,
I think Susan was pulling our collective leg :). We only get 295 cloudy
days per year - not 300!

Such wonderful things can grow in warmer places. One can sit here and
become
envious of all the west coast successes. On the 300 grey days, would it
really be 300? We have clouded over days from November until March, weeks
at a time. I can sympathize with that. You pack a bag and leave here.
I will contribute that Etoile Violette will grow in my garden and will make
it about ten feet or more. I do not prune any clematis. Etoile Violette
grows here all over a huge old Kalmia and has survived all manner of insults
from years of drought to being lost in the maze once or twice and mowed
down.
You should be able to grow several clematis on one arch in a zone 5 garden.
It does not matter if they twine together, the vines are slender and two or
three would be better than one. Don't expect much the first year.
Another bit on mail order clematis - the vines are brittle. If you can find
it locally it will have a better chance as you can select a strong growing
plant. Within an easy drive from our isolation, we can find many kinds of
clematis to purchase at nurseries which are now carrying large inventories
of
clematis.
