I am growing Carnaby (if it is Carnaby, as you say, things get
mislabelled sometimes.) This is one that doesn't need to be cut back to
the ground and shouldn't be or you won't get flowers. When I trim mine
back for neatness I get fewer blooms. Only disappointment I'v had with
this one is the color-- picture in catalogue showed a pale pink with a
nice red bar down the center of the petals, but mine is kind of a washed
out lavendar and the bar is rarely visible. Difference in climate? Don't
know. It blooms heavily mid to late April here and throws a few flowers
throughout the summer.
No one has said this in this discussion and it may be only my experience,
but it seems that patience with clematis is a must-- mine never reach
their full glory until 5 years after planting, then they last forever and
are splendid.
